The Blessed Virgin Mary was a woman of a few words. In the gospel, she intervened on behalf of the married couple when they needed assistance. She simply said to Jesus “They have no wine”.
Her statement, “Do whatever he tells you”, reveals a blessed assurance that her prayer will be answered. Indeed, her prayer was answered beyond expectations. The wine provided by Jesus during his first miracle was “out of this world”.
Mary, patroness of the Order of Preachers, continues to intercede for us. With the upcoming baptism of the Lord, our Christmas season will come to an end. In the meantime, we will celebrate the feast of the Epiphany, the visit of the Magi to the Holy Family. Am I ready, are we ready to go the extra mile and “do whatever the Lord tells me”? Do I “walk by faith” especially when I do not understand what the Lord is asking of me? The servers at the wedding did. So did the Virgin Mary. She answered “yes” to the invitation received from God conveyed by the angel Gabriel. Ever since, she has done whatever God wants her to do.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, teach us to trust your son, Jesus. Please continue to pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death! Amen!
