In today’s reading from the Gospel according to St. John, Jesus calls Mary Magdalene to be the first witness and preacher of His resurrection from the dead. For this reason, after leaving the Risen Christ, Mary Magdalene finds His disciples and tells them, “I have seen the Lord.” This call reaffirms the important role of women in the Church for being faithful witnesses and proclaimers of the Risen Christ. In my life, women have had the greatest influence upon me in faithfully witnessing and proclaiming the Risen Christ to me. I think about my maternal grandmother Mercedes who taught me to contemplate and pray the Rosary, including the Glorious Mystery of Christ’s Resurrection. I also think about my mother who taught me the Scriptures as a boy by reading them to me and by living them, especially as a single mother. As we move through this Easter season, let us think about those women in our lives who have faithfully taught us to be Christ-like by their witness and preaching. May the Risen Christ reign in our hearts!
