Temple guards were among the many Jews listening to Jesus Christ that day. These guards were good men, men of prayer who hungered and thirsted for God. Their usual place to pray was the temple where they served. Today, God himself was speaking back to them. They were being fed the Word of God straight from Jesus’ lips. The Lord, the Living Water himself, satiated their thirst. They listened, and were convinced, that Jesus was the prophet and that he very well could be the long-awaited Messiah.
These men, with humble and contrite hearts engaged in a dialogue of love with Jesus Christ as he was preaching. When the prayerful preaching ended, they continued to reflect and entered a studious conversation with those around them on who Jesus Christ really was. Their hearts were convinced. They just could not arrest him.
They went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, the most learned men in the city. Their hearts were filled with Jesus, but they had no prisoner. They approached the pulpit. When asked why the Lord was not arrested, they preached a beautiful, and very short, sermon to the unbelieving religious leaders, “Never has anyone spoken like this man!” They spoke the truth and the truth was rejected. May we also dare to preach the truth after our time of listening and being with Christ in prayer and study. Amen.
