It is no news for me to mention the great divides that exist in our lives these days. We know that division exists in just about every corner of our lives. Starting in our own homes, or communities, we see divisions in our church, our society, our government, our country, and our world. Unfortunately, these divisions spill over into violence and death at times to often.
Perhaps you thought about that as you read Jesus’ words in today’s gospel reading, “Every kingdom divided against itself will be laid waste and house will fall against house.” Sobering words. Timely words. Is there anything we can do to turn around this path of eventual self-collapse?
We can’t change people, but we can change ourselves. How do we treat others who are not of the same thinking as ours? Do we tolerate them, wish them no harm, try to trust them, and be kind to them? Is it possible that in the end, all sides want the same things in life? Maybe we don’t know what other people want in life, because we don’t listen to what he/she is saying. Most times it is hard. Ears are closed. Tongues are in high gear and volume. What are you as an individual, a Christian, willing to risk this Lent to help turn this dangerous path around? Whatever it is, God will give grace in abundance to help you.
