“Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous deeds.”
During this Season of Advent, our world is spinning out of control with war, violence, catastrophic weather, institutional breakdowns and so many more issues that weigh heavily upon our spirit. To maintain a joyful Christian heart is, at times, a challenge. Perhaps, that is why we are given instruction to, “Sing to the Lord a new song, for he has done marvelous deeds.” Recalling God’s deeds helps us to keep things in perspective.
Today, the Church recalls a marvelous deed God had done in the Immaculate Conception of Mary. It was the beginning of the salvation plan. From the Angel Gabriel, we learn that Mary was chosen, that she was full of grace, and that God had found favor with her. Chosen, grace-filled, favored: Foundations for the visitation of the divine amongst God’s people.
We know this because St. Paul paints a similar scenario of us. We, too, are chosen through Christ, blessed, holy, without blemish, adopted. We are all part of the salvation plan that continues to this day. Since Jesus’ time on earth, God has done and continues to do so many marvelous deeds. Let us recall those done in our own lives to help sustain our joyful spirits during our turbulent times.
