Freedom is a word dear to the heart of every US citizen and most other people as well. Upon examination of the word, we see that there are two dimensions to the word: there is freedom from and freedom for. The founders of our nation sought freedom from tyranny and a freedom for forming “a more perfect union” for securing “the Blessings of Liberty.” God wanted freedom from the tyranny of Pharaoh in Egypt for his chosen people so they would possess freedom for pursuing a life lived in union with God and with each other that God’s law provided. It does no good to have our shackles removed if we are not led to the wisdom and power which makes possible the fullness of life to which all freedom is directed. By pondering and savoring the words and deeds of Jesus we are led to live in his mind and heart, to make our home there. Remaining in Jesus, the Word made flesh, we receive the true “Blessings of Liberty”: freedom from all that hampers us from receiving the Father’s love and the freedom to pursue and receive the power to love as God loves.
