“They speak of the glory of your reign, and tell of your mighty works, making known to the sons of men your mighty acts, the majestic glory of your rule. Your reign is a reign for all ages, your dominion for all generations. The Lord is trustworthy in all his words, and loving in all his works.” -Psalm 145: 11-13
2016 will mark the 800th anniversary of the Order of Friars Preachers, a major milestone of St. Dominic’s vision. This Jubilee Year provides us an opportunity to reflect not only the history of the Order but also on the history of our Province. Psalm 145, read on St. Martin’s feast day, reminds us of the eternal goodness of God. God is loving and good yesterday, today, and forever.
In 2016 our Province will turn 37 years old and the 2016 Jubilee gives us a prime opportunity to recall and collect our history for all generations.
Over the next 18 months we will be collecting information, stories, pictures, documents videos, etc., about the history of the Province of St. Martin de Porres with the intent of producing a written history of the Province as told by the men and women —friars, sisters, and laity— that form and have formed the Province. There are two goals, a short-term to be completed at the end of 2016, and a long-term to be completed by 2029. By the end of 2016, we hope to have as many documents, pictures, video and audio recordings as possible. Using these sources and stories we will compile and write a history of the Province for the 50th anniversary of the Province in 2029.
This is where YOU come in! If you have any documents or pictures, if you want to tell us the stories you remember about the beginning of the Province, traditions, experiences with ministry sites, historic events, friars that have died, or anything related to the history of the Province of St. Martin de Porres, we would be more than happy to receive them. Please send us documents or pictures, a video recording, an audio (voice) recording or anything you may think is helpful. Recordings do not need to be professional, just clear—recordings on smartphones such as an iPhone or Galaxy, an iPad or tablet, or your tape recorder and cassettes will work just fine. If you are more technology savvy, you can help by recording someone else as they give their story or experience.
Thank you for your willingness to help with this project and for your insights and stories. Please do not hesitate to contact the project coordinator, Fr. Francis Orozco, O.P., with any questions, comments, or suggestions. We all have something to contribute to the future generations of our Province.
