Expectations! We all have expectations. A boss has expectations towards a new employee. A newly married man has expectations towards his wife. Expectations can become overwhelming when it seems that they are too much or too high for us; they seem unreachable. Sometimes, we can be trapped in the expectations of many people and even our own. But, what about God’s expectations?
Some members of the first century Christian communities were so entangled with the expectation about the second coming of Our Lord to the point that while they were waiting, they misunderstood the faith and felt into extremes of fear, anxiety, and delusion. In the meantime, Jesus himself reminded them of God’s expectation for them during that time of waiting, “Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy”, “Be vigilant and pray.” In the same way, Saint Paul exhorts the community to “increase and abound in love”, “strengthen your heart”, “be blameless in holiness”, “conduct yourselves to please God”.
At the beginning of Advent, while we wait in expectation, it would be good to meditate on God’s expectation for us. A practical way to do it when we wake up is to ask God: what do you want from me today? Listen attentively to His answer. In doing so, while we wait during this advent, God’s promise will be fulfilled once again.
