GOD is always with us, but HE waits for us to turn to HIM. In our first reading Ahaz and his army were losing their fight against the Assyrians because they chose to rely on their own strength rather than relying on GOD. GOD speaks to Isaiah and instructs him to encourage the king to seek a miracle – GOD has a plan to save HIS people, but the Israelites refuse and fall to the Assyrians. GOD still has a plan and is still with us.
Today’s Gospel relates how GOD’s plan was fulfilled through Joseph and Mary. Joseph was a righteous man versed in the scriptures, so he knew of the prophesy of Isaiah. He also knew the Mosaic law which would have Mary stoned for a pregnancy outside of marriage. This was obviously quite a dilemma for Joseph, but GOD has a plan. Sending an angel to Joseph in a dream GOD assures him that HE is with him if he will follow HIM. Joseph doesn’t hesitate to follow because he firmly believes GOD is with him!
We know that Paul persecuted the early Christians until GOD showed him the error of his ways and called him to preach the gospel. GOD continued to assure Paul that He was with him despite all his trials and Paul continued to follow HIM. EMMANUEL – GOD is with us! Are we with HIM?
