Let it be done to me.
St. Mary's life could be bookended with the Annunciation and being at the foot of the cross. The words of the angel, "Be not afraid you have found favor with God," remained in St. Mary's memory as she lived out her life with her Son. She remembers herself as that young woman wrapped in silence as she held her newborn Son to the years later when in the daunting silence she stood beneath the cross of her crucified Son.
How could she have imagined all that her "fiat," her yes, to the angel would bring into her life through the years? Such memories of joy and such memories of suffering and pain she held in her heart. And what about us? Can we imagine what our committed life would hold when we too uttered our fiat? What have we pondered as the mystery of life is revealed to us? We hold the tenderness of God’s love for us in joy. And in our sorrow, we embrace the heartache as St. Mary did with silent tears. Like St. Mary, we have found favor with God and there is nothing to fear. The mystery kept secret for long ages is remembered in the salvation history of our own lives.
