I am someone who loves reviews! It doesn’t matter if I am buying a new lightbulb or going out for a nice dinner, I am sure to check reviews on various websites and apps to make sure it will be a positive experience. I also love writing reviews – giving the details on the functions of the latest gadget that I am trying out, or posting a picture about the great hamburger I tried across town.
It seems in our Gospel reading today that reviews are important too. John the Baptist sends his followers to Jesus asking if He is the Messiah. And Jesus tells them to report back to John on what they have seen, heard and experienced. “Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the good news proclaimed to them. And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me.” (Luke 7:22-23). John and his disciples know that Jesus is the Lord because of the marvelous things they have seen and heard. And so, it is with us. As followers of Jesus, we are called to share the Good News – what we have come to know through our hearing, our sight, our experiences – that Jesus Christ is the King of Kings, the Lord of the Lords, the Long Awaited Messiah. Much like a review online, sharing our faith with those around us can be the nudge a family member or friend may need to come to know Jesus.
