“Whoever has ears ought to hear.” Matthew 11:15
Isaiah and the prophets had ears to hear, and they not only listened to God speaking, but they weren’t afraid to speak God’s word to the people of Israel. They told how God has cared for them in good times and hard times. John the Baptist also heard God’s Word. He reminded the people of the prophecies of the Messiah who was to come. Jesus of Nazareth did come in the time of the Baptist.
Today we have heard these same prophecies. We know that they have been fulfilled. Jesus the Messiah has come and is our savior. We and people throughout history have needed models to help us hear God’s Word and put it into practice. St. John of the Cross was one. In his writings and by his life of silence with God he became a model for the mystics of his time.
How do we hear God’s word in our lives today? We have the Scriptures to show us the way. We have models to help us hear. Do we hear? What do we hear? In the middle of this Advent season, let us take time – time to be quiet. It is in silence that we can really hear God’s Word and put it into practice.
