The Advent readings today are a healing response to our need for hope and comfort in the words and promises of the Lord. In the first reading from the Book of Isaiah, we read/hear what Isaiah prophesied about the unity of nations and a universal declaration of peaceful ways. The news in our times shows so much animosity and bitterness among hostile nations, polarizing factions within nations, and yes, tumult even within our churches, neighborhoods, and families. Isaiah envisioned many peoples flocking to the house of the Lord "that he may instruct us in his ways, and we may walk in his paths.” Oh, would that be more a part of our Advent experiences this year!
The Gospel selection according to Matthew is the story of the centurion who begs Jesus to heal his servant. Although the person is an unpopular foreigner who is asking, Jesus indicates that he is willing to go and do so immediately. Jesus commends the centurion for expressing his faith that Jesus's word would be enough to heal the suffering man.
These readings contain lessons about the Lord's providential care for all humanity, the power of faith, and encouragement to walk in the light of the Lord, even in the darkness. Whatever the strife is in our lives, we can look forward to the Lord's resolution of peace as we strive to work for peace a little at a time. The centurion's words are the basis for the words we speak during Communion at Mass to ask the Lord to heal our souls. Jesus's word as well as His Presence in the blessed sacrament of His Body and Blood will do it for us; let us ask in faith with blessed assurance!
