In this reading, we are given very specific details about the moment that John the Baptist, hearing God’s word to him, began the work to which God had called him. We hear Luke tell us that “In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John…in the wilderness.” It was time for John to respond. It was time for him to act. And he did.
As we enter this specific moment in time of the second week of Advent 2021, this is our time to listen to God’s word, God’s call in our lives. Like John, each one of us is invited to prepare the way for the light of Christ to enter our world. What is the word of God that you hear? Is it a call to listen with compassion to the one in your life that you don’t connect with easily? Is it a call to be more gentle or compassionate with yourself?
I speak to many people who fear that the word God will have for them may be something bigger than they feel they are able to do. God is not like that. Each one of us is called by God in a unique way to use the gifts that we’ve been given. We are never asked to go it alone. If we are open, God will lead us. Like John the Baptist, we are simply asked to listen and respond.
