“Oh Syria, my love I hear your moaning in the cries of the doves. I hear your screaming cry.”
Lament for Syria, written by Amineh Abou Kerech, winner of the 2017 Betjeman Poetry Prize for 10–13-year-old. The first lines of today’s scripture: “Comfort, give comfort to my people,” most certainly are words that so many people around the world yearn to hear. Today I think of the many children whose daily bread is sullied with war, hunger, homelessness, cries of pain and fear. They look for their wastelands to be filled with hope, their hills to be brought low by tender care, their rugged land to be turned into places where they can play, truly be children. Around the world, perhaps in our own neighborhood, God calls us to listen to the cry of children. This Advent season, may we be signs of hope for them by putting our faith in action.
