Today, John teaches us that the love of God is revealed to us in the giving of Christ Jesus to the world so that we might have life through Him. And not just ordinary life, but Divine Life by grace. It is the nature of this divine love that it be nourishing and lifegiving, and when it is shared, it is only amplified and never diminished or lost.
We are given an illustration of this through Jesus's miracle with the loaves and fish. Here, God takes that which is of the Earth and transforms it, multiplying it sufficient to feed five thousand men who, after eating it, "were satisfied" and nourished. This event points us toward the Holy Eucharist, which will bring about new life in us by immersing us in the ultimate act of divine love: Christ's suffering, death, and resurrection.
As Dominicans and as Christians, this divine love is, in fact, our vocation -- we are asked (and, in fact, commanded) to share this love through our actions and through Holy Preaching. We have the same promise and certain hope that when we do this, it will only be amplified and never diminished or lost.
