Fr. Restituto Pérez Gutiérrez, OP
May 29, 1933 – February 13, 2023

On February 13, 2023, Father Restituto Pérez Gutiérrez, OP, age 89, died at St. Catherine West Rehabilitation Hospital in Hialeah, Florida, after a brief illness. Fr. Restituto was born in Ávila, Spain, on May 29, 1933, to parents José and Aurelia, who raised a close-knit family of eight brothers and sisters, of which he was the third eldest. Known as Fr. Tuto by the many people he served throughout 63 years of priestly ministry, and known simply as Tuto to his Dominican brothers, family, and close friends, he and younger brother José both joined the Order of Preachers as friars of the missionary Province of the Holy Rosary. Fr. Tuto entered the novitiate of Holy Rosary Province in Ocaña, Toledo, in 1952. He completed Philosophy studies in 1957 at that province’s Studium in Ávila, and completed his Theology studies in 1961 in the Province of St. Albert the Great in Dubuque, Iowa. He continued his education in Manila, Philippines, where he earned a degree in Psychology in 1964. Fr. Tuto eventually joined St. Albert’s Province and relocated to the United States. When the Southern US Province of St. Martin de Porres was founded in 1979, Fr. Tuto joined the newly formed Southern Province, where he would live the remainder of his 43 years of Dominican life. Fr. Tuto served from 1968-1980 as Associate Pastor of St. Pius Parish in Chicago, followed by a two-year term as Associate Pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Tampa, Florida. From 1983-1986, he was Pastor of St. Dominic Parish in Miami, followed by three years as Associate Pastor of St. Cecilia Parish in San Antonio, Texas. In 1993, he returned to St. Dominic in Miami for another term as Associate Pastor, and he continued to reside and serve there from 1983 until his death. Fr. Tuto loved Dominican life and maintained close ties to his family throughout his life. He is predeceased by his parents Aurelia and José, as well as siblings Albina, Carlos, and José. He is survived by his brothers Sergio, Alejandro, and Martín, his sister Luisa, 16 nieces and nephews, and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews in his native Spain. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by them, his Dominican brothers, and the parishioners of St. Dominic for his earthiness, easy spirit, and perspicacious sense of humor, and a lifetime of dedicated service to the people of God.

El 13 de febrero de 2023, el Padre Restituto Pérez Gutiérrez, OP, de 89 años, falleció en el Hospital de Rehabilitación St. Catherine en Hialeah, Florida, tras una breve enfermedad. El padre Restituto nació en Ávila, España el 29 de mayo de 1933 de padres José y Aurelia, y era el tercero de ocho hermanos. Conocido como el padre Tuto por las muchas personas a las que sirvió a lo largo de 63 años de sacerdocio, y conocido simplemente como Tuto por sus cófrades dominicos, familiares y amigos cercanos, él y su hermano José entraron a la Orden de Predicadores como frailes de la Provincia misionera del Santo Rosario. El padre Tuto ingresó al noviciado de la Provincia del Santo Rosario en Ocaña, Toledo en 1952. Completó los estudios de filosofía en 1957 en el estudiantado de esa provincia en Ávila, y realizó los estudios de teología en la Provincia de San Alberto Magno en Estados Unidos, en Dubuque, Iowa. Continuó su educación en Manila, Filipinas, donde obtuvo una licenciatura en sicología en 1964. Eventualmente, el padre Tuto se transfiliaría a la Provincia de San Alberto en Estados Unidos. Al fundarse la nueva Provincia de San Martín de Porres en el Sur de EU en 1979, el Padre Tuto se unió a la recién formada entidad, donde viviría el resto de sus 43 años de vida dominicana. De 1968 a 1980, el Padre Tuto sirvió como vicario de la parroquia San Pío en Chicago, seguido de dos años como vicario de Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro en Tampa, Florida. De 1983 a 1986, fue párroco de Santo Domingo en Miami, seguido de tres años como vicario de Santa Cecilia en San Antonio, Texas. En 1993, regresó a la parroquia Santo Domingo en Miami como vicario, y allí ejerció el ministerio desde 1983 hasta su fallecimiento. El Padre Tuto sentía un amor profundo por la vida dominicana y mantuvo lazos estrechos con su familia durante toda la vida. Le antecedieron en muerte sus padres Aurelia y José, así como sus hermanos Albina, Carlos y José. Le sobreviven sus hermanos Sergio, Alejandro y Martín, su hermana Luisa, 16 sobrinas y sobrinos y numerosos sobrinos nietos en España. Todos lo recordarán con entrañable cariño, al igual que sus hermanos dominicos y los feligreses de Santo Domingo. Sobre todo será recordado por su carácter llevadero y humor perspicaz, y toda una vida de entrega al pueblo de Dios.
