The devil is alive and well in our first reading and still today! Fear and anger fill the hearts and minds of the wicked. Jesus stirred their conscience, which made them think that the only way for them to be “free” was to put him to death. They did not know that there is no freedom/rest until we “rest in the Lord.” What about us?
In the Gospel, we see how people’s prejudice clouds their judgement. Sounds familiar? Jesus, a young man from Nazareth could not be the Messiah. As he told his hearers then, he is telling us today: "you know me and you know where I come from, I am from God and God sent me." Does it make a difference in our lives and in the lives of others that we know Jesus? As Saint Vincent Ferrer, one of my favorite Dominican Saints who died on April 5, 1419, said: "Whatever you do, think not of yourself, but of God."
