St. Augustine once spoke of the love of God and the love of neighbor—the subject of today’s Gospel reading—as the wings of a bird. Can you love only God? No, that won’t fly. Can you love only your neighbor? No, that won’t fly either. Only by loving God and your neighbor can you fly and reach heaven. Of course, loving God and loving your neighbor are easier said than done, but they are so worth the effort. In doing so, we prepare for an everlasting communion with both in the kingdom of heaven.
