So often we think of Lent as a time to grow closer to God. We were given the tools to do so on Ash Wednesday – prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Other than giving alms these practices seem to focus on our personal relationship with God. Today’s readings give us a different slant. We are reminded to be proactive. We are reminded that we don’t live in isolation. Our lives are not based on just a Jesus and me relationship. Instead, we live in community. We deepen our relationship to God through our relationship with the people around us. This means sharing our resources (whatever they may be) with those we meet. We need to reach out to others who are in need regardless of their ability or status. The people we meet may be hungry or thirsty for many kinds of food – (physical, spiritual, psychological, etc.) Sometimes it may be a comforting word, a smile, a kind gesture. Other times it may mean that we really go out of our way to visit the sick or in jail or stuck in their homes or the hospital. You know your life situation. You know what you can do. At the end of each day an examination of conscience of this gospel could be a good Lenten practice.
