Jesus traveled to Bethany six days before the Passover and shared a meal with people he loved, including Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, whom he had revived from the dead. In an intimate moment, Mary, Lazarus’ sister, washed and anointed Jesus’ feet with very expensive perfume. Mary’s act of love expressed her unity with Jesus and confirmed his predestined death. Judas, who was also present, expressed his concern for the value of the perfume. He thought it would be better to sell it for a large sum of money that would be given to the poor. Judas was a thief and had no real concern for the poor.
How often do we ignore opportunities for good works and acts of love for those nearest to us? Jesus, knowing that his time was short, said, “Leave her alone. Let her keep this for the day of my burial. You will always have the poor with you.”
Prayer
Father God, thank you for showing us how to love one another, and for loving us so much! Your Word Is truth, and through your divine will, may our minds and hearts be transformed, devoted in perfect love to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
