Fear and guilt over our past seem to haunt more and more people today. During Lent, many of us have taken the opportunity to stop, reflect, and examine our past lives in order to grow in conversion. Seeing our sins in the fresh light of Lent, we may have gone to confession or reached out to someone to ask them for forgiveness. Yet, the guilt remains. The prophet Isaiah offers us consolation this morning.
Isaiah says, "The things of the past shall not be remembered or come to mind. Instead, there shall always be rejoicing and happiness in what I [God] create." Isaiah reminds us to hope and rejoice in the new life God is creating for us this Lent! Conversion is difficult because we have to hope. For, hope is not a virtue of ignorance but of wisdom. The wisdom of hope calls us to move beyond what we know of our past and feel reassured that God can and does create new lives for us to thrive.
May the joy and delight from our new lives continue to grow in the hope of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
