How quickly we can forget what we say and promise. We are fragile beings. Jesus became one like us, fragile: “He was in such agony and he prayed so fervently.” How much more we, who fall into temptation, are supposed to pray to the Father. Today’s readings narrate us the last days preceding the death of our Savior to His last breath before His Resurrection. We began with the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem. The people received Him with enthusiasm, spreading their cloaks on the road and saying, “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” In that way, we can also receive the Word of Jesus with joy and, in less than a week, forget who He is. Or, worse even, deny Him altogether.
That is the moving experience that we read about Peter—the prince of the Apostles, the first among equals, the one whom Jesus chose as leader—who promised, “Lord, I am prepared to go to prison and to die with you.” That same night, at the first hint of danger, he was not even able to admit that he is a disciple of Jesus Christ. Much less was he prepared to go to prison for Him or suffer death. Jesus Himself knew this. Then, after Peter’s confession of faith, Jesus wants to show him one more time how to live out that faith: with prayer. They go up to the Mount of Olives together, and Jesus tells them, “Pray that you may not undergo the test.”
Moreover, Jesus gives us that message today. We have made a promise in our confession of faith, that we will fulfill God’s word, even if it looks difficult. And, even then, we fall into our former way of living once again. We turn to our vices, to that which we know will make us feel good, but only momentarily. In a similar way, those who are addicted to alcohol, to drugs, to money, power, or sex, and many other things, have tried to leave their vices many times before. Recovery programs, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, have as a principle to recognize that we cannot lift ourselves up alone but that we need the assistance of God. For this reason, when we fall, Jesus does not leave us stranded but invites us to try again by trusting in Him: “Get up and pray that you may not undergo the test.” With these words, we repent of our sins, resort to Confession kneeling and asking for forgiveness. In this way, with sincere repentance, with our confession of faith, and with our trust in God, we have the hope to hear these words of Jesus on the day of our death: “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”Reflexión por Fray Carlos Salas, OP:
Cuán rápido nos podemos olvidar de lo que decimos y prometemos. Somos seres frágiles. Así se hizo Jesús, frágil, como nosotros, y “en su angustia mortal, oraba con mayor insistencia.” Cuánto más nosotros que caemos en tentaciones no debemos orarle al Padre. Las lecturas de hoy nos narran los últimos días precediendo a la muerte de nuestro Salvador hasta el último suspiro antes de su Resurrección. Primero comenzamos con la entrada de Jesús a Jerusalén. La gente lo recibió con entusiasmo tapizando el camino con sus mantos y diciendo, “¡Bendito el rey que viene en nombre del Señor!” Así también nosotros podemos recibir la Palabra de Jesús con alegría y en menos de una semana nos olvidamos de quien es Él. O, peor aún, lo negamos rotundamente.
Esa es la experiencia tan conmovedora que leemos sobre Pedro—el príncipe de los apóstoles, el primero entre iguales, al que Jesús eligió líder—quien prometió, “Señor, estoy dispuesto a ir contigo incluso a la cárcel y a la muerte.” Y, esa misma noche, a la primera pista de peligro, él ni si quiera es capaz de admitir que es un discípulo de Jesucristo. Mucho menos estaba preparado para ir a la cárcel por Él o sufrir la muerte. Jesús mismo sabía esto. Por esto, después de esa confesión de fe de Pedro, Jesús les quiere mostrar una vez más cómo vivir esa fe: con la oración. Van juntos al monte de los Olivos y Jesús les dice, “Oren, para no caer en la tentación.”
Así mismo Jesús nos da ese mensaje hoy. Hemos hecho una promesa en nuestra confesión de fe, que haremos lo que Dios nos dice, aunque parezca difícil. Y, aún así, volvemos a caer en nuestra antigua manera de vida. Recurrimos a nuestros vicios, a aquello que sabemos que nos hace sentir bien, pero solo momentáneamente. De una manera similar, los que son adictos al alcohol, las drogas, al dinero, al poder, al sexo, y a otras muchas cosas, han intentado dejar sus vicios en muchas ocasiones. Programas de recuperación como Alcohólicos Anónimos tienen como principio reconocer que no podemos levantarnos solos, pero que necesitamos la ayuda de Dios. Es por esto por lo que cuando fallamos, Jesus no nos deja tirados, pero nos invita a intentar de nuevo, confiando en Él: “Levántense y oren para no caer en la tentación.” Con estas palabras, nos arrepentimos de nuestros pecados, acudimos a la Confesión de rodillas pidiendo perdón. De esta manera, con el arrepentimiento sincero, con nuestra confesión de fe, y la confianza en Dios, tenemos la esperanza de escuchar estas palabras de Jesús el día de nuestra muerte: “Yo te aseguro que hoy estarás conmigo en el paraíso.”Something to think about: - I recognize that I fall into sin after promising never to do it again. Do I ask God to help me get up, or do I drown in remorse?
- It is easy to forget that what Jesus did 2,000 years ago was for us. But it is true. Paraphrasing the letter of St. Paul to the Philippians, we read this: ‘Jesus became one of us, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.’ God became a man to die tortured for our sins so that we do not have to suffer eternal condemnation.
Algo en que pensar: - Reconozco que caigo en pecado después de haber prometido no volverlo a hacer. ¿Le pido a Dios que me ayude a levantarme, o me sumerjo en el remordimiento?
- Es fácil olvidarnos que lo que hizo Jesús hace 2,000 años fue por nosotros. Pero es verdad. Parafraseando de la carta de san Pablo a los Filipenses, esto leemos: ‘Jesús se hizo uno de nosotros, se humilló a sí mismo y por obediencia aceptó incluso la muerte, y una muerte de cruz.’ Dios se hizo un hombre para morir torturado por nuestros pecados para que nosotros no tengamos que sufrir la condenación eterna.
