The Scripture readings today call us to joyful patience as we await the coming of the Lord. But how can we do this amidst the difficulties in life? Even the prophecy of Isaiah reaches our ears with an occupied mind of everything that worries us and concerns us today. Isaiah talks about a future and a present: they will meet with joy and gladness, sorrow and mourning will flee along with, Here is your God, he comes with vindication…he comes to save you.
And all of that is true: We have difficult days/weeks/months, yes, but also God is coming to meet us with everlasting joy and gladness. Even more, our God is already here! We prepare to celebrate the birth of God in our midst as a human being like us. This is also an opportunity to prepare our lives for Christ’s coming in glory and when we meet Him in judgment. And very important for all of this: God is already here to help us in this journey. The Trinity already dwells in each of us who have received God by our Baptism.
This should bring us excitement and joy! God is here! God is acting in our lives and the lives of all our loved ones today. Yet, St. James asks us to be patient… until the coming of the Lord. God is here and working in our lives, but there is more that Christ has in store for us. In this waiting, we recognize God’s grace amidst our difficulties. That is Christian joy: recognizing God’s grace amidst the difficulties of our daily life. This patience in waiting is like that of a farmer who waits. It is a patient waiting like a mother and a father filled with joy to meet their child. They suffer pains and worry about what awaits them with the new life God gives them, yet they are joyful for God’s abundant graces.
This joyful patience is emulated well by St. John the Baptist here. He is in jail and hears of the graces that Jesus is doing in people’s lives, those that the prophet Isaiah foretold. John wants to share in that joy and accept God’s grace in his life, too. So, John seeks to know more. He is yearning for the Truth; he is looking for Jesus. May we, too, look for Jesus in our lives amidst our pains and sorrows because in finding Him today, we will find joy awaiting His coming.Reflexión por Fray Carlos Salas, OP:
Las lecturas de las Escrituras de hoy nos llaman a una paciencia alegre mientras esperamos la venida del Señor. Pero, ¿cómo podemos hacer esto en medio de tantas dificultades en la vida? Incluso la profecía de Isaías llega a nuestros oídos con una mente ocupada de todo lo que nos preocupa hoy. Isaías habla sobre un futuro y un presente: serán su escolta el gozo y la dicha, porque la pena y la aflicción habrán terminado junto con He aquí que su Dios, vengador y justiciero, viene ya para salvarlos.
Y todo esto es cierto: Tenemos días/semanas/meses difíciles, sí, pero también Dios viene para encontrarnos con una alegría y gozo eternos. ¡Aún más, nuestro Dios ya está aquí! Nos preparamos para celebrar el nacimiento de Dios en medio de nosotros como un ser humano como nosotros. Esta también es una oportunidad para prepara nuestras vidas para la venida de Cristo en gloria y cuando lo encontremos en el juicio. Y muy importante para todo esto: Dios ya está aquí para ayudarnos en el camino. La Trinidad ya reside en cada uno de nosotros que hemos recibido a Dios por nuestro bautismo.
¡Esto debería traernos emoción y alegría! ¡Dios está aquí! Dios actúa en nuestras vidas y en las vidas de todos nuestros seres queridos hoy. Aún, Santiago nos pide, sean pacientes hasta la venida del Señor. Dios está aquí y trabajando en nuestras vidas, pero hay más que Cristo tiene preparado para nosotros. En esta espera, reconocemos la gracia de Dios en medio de las dificultades. Esa es la alegría Cristiana: reconocer la gracia de Dios en medio de las dificultades de la vida diaria. Esta paciencia en esperar es como el labrador que espera. Es una espera paciente como una madre y padre llenos de alegría para conocer a su hijo. Sufren dolores y se preocupan de lo que les espera con esta vida nueva que Dios les ha dado, pero son alegres por la gracia abundante que Dios les da.
Esta alegre paciencia es emulada bien por San Juan Bautista aquí. Él está en la cárcel y oye sobre las gracias que Jesús hace en las vidas de las personas, aquellas que predijo el profeta Isaías. Juan quiere compartir en esa alegría y aceptar la gracia de Dios en su vida, también. Juan busca conocer más. Desea conocer la Verdad; busca a Jesucristo. Busquemos a Jesucristo en nuestras vidas en medio de nuestros dolores y dificultades porque al encontrarlo hoy, encontraremos alegría al esperar Su venida.Something to bring to prayer: - Like John the Baptist sent his disciples to find out if Jesus is the one who is to come, what can I do this week to look for Jesus and His grace in my life and the life of my neighbor?
- With whom can I share the Gospel message this week?
The prophet Isaiah tells us, say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God.
Consider when we heard that message and the need we had to hear it. The Good News are not meant to be stored for ourselves but to be shared openly.
Algo para traer a la oración: - Como San Juan Bautista envió a sus discípulos para investigar si Jesús era el que ha de venir, ¿qué puedo hacer esta semana para buscar a Jesús y Su gracia y la vida de mi vecino?
- ¿Con quién puedo compartir el mensaje del Evangelio esta semana?
El profeta Isaías nos dice, Digan a los de corazón apocado: ¡Ánimo! No teman.
Considera cuando escuchamos ese mensaje y cuánto necesitábamos escucharlo. La Buena Nueva no es para guardarse para uno mismo sino para compartirla abiertamente.
