Reflection by Br. Carlos Salas, OP: We must use our autonomy to give glory to God through our calling in life. Joshua respected of the people’s autonomy: “decide today whom you will serve.” Each of us has this freedom to decide whether to serve, glorify God, or give ourselves over to passing things. The tribes of Israel responded by saying, “We also will serve the LORD, for he is our God.” They made a promise to serve the God who saved them. Similarly, people today make vows to express such promises. For example, some men or women make religious vows to give their lives over to God. Other men and women make matrimonial vows to give their life over to God together. Each of these chooses to give their whole selves to God with the help of other people: their religious community, spouse, friendships, and others. Christianity is inherently communal because, as Baptized people, we are members of Christ’s Body. And, as St. Paul says, “no one hates his own flesh.” Thus, when we choose to give ourselves over to Christ, we do so through the Christian community, the Body of Christ.	Reflexión por Fray Carlos Salas, OP: Debemos utilizar nuestra autonomía para glorificar a Dios a través de nuestro llamado en la vida. Josué respetó la autonomía de las personas: “digan aquí y ahora a quién quieren servir.” Cada uno de nosotros tenemos esa libertad para decidir si servir, glorificar a Dios, o de entregarnos a cosas pasajeras. Las tribus de Israel respondieron diciendo, “También nosotros serviremos al Señor, porque él es nuestro Dios.” Hicieron una promesa para servir al Dios que los salvó. Similarmente, personas hoy toman votos para expresar esas promesas. Por ejemplo, algunos hombres o mujeres toman votos religiosos para entregar sus vidas a Dios. Otros hombres y mujeres toman votos matrimoniales para entregar sus vidas a Dios juntos. Cada uno de ellos escoge dar todo su ser a Dios con la ayuda de otras personas: su comunidad religiosa, esposo(a), amistades, y otros. La cristiandad es inherentemente comunal porque, como personas bautizadas, somos miembros del cuerpo de Cristo. Y, como dice San Pablo, “nadie jamás ha odiado a su propio cuerpo.” Entonces, cuando elegimos entregarnos completamente a Cristo, lo hacemos a través de la comunidad cristiana, el Cuerpo de Cristo.
Something to think about: Think of your marriage, or a marriage that you admire as being centered in Christ. In what ways does the wife represent the Church? In what ways does the husband reflect Christ and His love for the Church? When was the first time that you understood what the doctrine of the Eucharist teaches? That Jesus Christ is truly present (not merely symbolically) in the Eucharist, the consecrated Host. Could you hear Jesus asking, “Does this shock you?” Many left Him because it is a hard saying. Yet, since we believe this truth as Catholics, we have also chosen to profess St. Peter’s words to Jesus Christ: “You have the words of eternal life.”	Algo en que pensar: Piense sobre su matrimonio, o un matrimonio que admire como siendo centrado en Jesucristo. ¿En qué maneras la esposa representa la Iglesia? ¿En qué maneras el esposo refleja a Cristo y Su amor por la Iglesia? ¿Cuándo fue la primera vez que entendió lo que la doctrina de la Eucaristía enseña? Que Jesucristo es presente verdaderamente (no solamente simbólicamente) en la Eucaristía, la Hostia consagrada. ¿Escuchó a Jesús preguntarle, “Esto lo escandaliza?” Muchos lo dejaron de seguir porque consideraban esta enseñanza intolerable. Aún, como creemos en esta verdad como católicos, también hemos elegido profesar las palabras de San Pedro a Jesucristo: “Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna.”
