Sacrifice and fasting were an integral part of the life of people in the Old Testament. Whether it be animal sacrifices or food sacrifices, the purifying symbol of the fire would be the offering of atonement. People wanted their sense of integrity restored with their Beloved Divine Mystery and this was done with prescribed sacrifices. But with Jesus in the New Testament, his very person and presence walking among the people brought a new meaning of what integrity to one’s faith and life meant.
Jesus preferred the inward quality of genuine compassion and a heart offering of charity and love for those in need as one’s atonement. So, how can we be true to our call of a faith life in Jesus today? Wendell Barry wrote, “I know that I have life only in so far as I have love.” Jesus the Bridegroom came that we may have life and have it to the full. We at times walk away from Love. Lent calls us to walk toward Love. That is what will bring us life, serving others with an open heart and the passionate fire of care and concern for others. How will the fire of care verify your integrity with your God?
