Those who were in the synagogue in Nazareth when Jesus proclaimed from Isaiah and then spoke of the text’s fulfillment turned out to be fickle, praising Jesus one moment and filled with murderous rage against him the next. As followers of Christ during Lent 2024, we cannot become mercurial in our thinking and actions. The words and works of Jesus compose the music and instruments we sing and play so to create harmony in the midst of the dissonance confronting us. All of Christ’s words we do well to accept with joy and follow with steadfast love. Otherwise, we become a cacophony to ourselves, to others, and to God. Confronting injustice in whatever form takes fortitude and truth-telling.
Etta James’ song “Swing Low Sweet Chariot” is a wondrously touching and harmonious song to sing. It calms a raging heart and mind. Yet, if there is fury in our hearts over injustice, let it come forth with a good measure of unwavering pluck.
