Just like today, there were religious disagreements in Jesus’ time. The Pharisees were skeptical about Jesus and his teachings. He wasn’t one of them. He wasn’t trained in the Torah as they were. The crowds were in awe of Jesus. He spoke from his heart – not just quoting the scriptures. As the guards said, “Never before has anyone spoken like this man.” There was honest truth in what he said.
The Pharisees seemed to say that the way he preached was illegal. It didn’t follow their way of preaching. So it must be wrong. Then Nicodemus spoke up. “Does our law condemn a man before it first hears him and finds out what he is doing?”
Sometimes that is our problem today. Because someone belongs to another church or is of a different nationality, political party, or culture, we often make judgments before the person even has a chance to speak. We disagree because we don’t want to hear the other side, we have already made up our minds, and we are afraid to change.
As we grow closer to our celebration of Jesus', death and resurrection, let us learn to be open to the truth that is in every person.
