As always, the Scripture readings are pertinent to contemporary times, as we find in today’s account from Isaiah.
The first line draws us to the “mountain of God’s house.” Mountains have a special place in Scripture, so much so that they are mentioned over 500 times. They hold significance, thought to be a place of God’s presence, close to the God who was in the heavens. For us today, as for the people of all ages, we are called to ascend the mountain of God’s house, for it is the place
where God is worshipped as the authority, not an authoritarian
where God teaches, so that we may walk in God’s ways
where God judges, always with divine mercy
where spears can be refashioned into pruning hooks and swords beaten into plowshares.
This season beckons us to embrace an attitude of humility, to climb the mountain, difficult though it might be, where grace is accessible to every open heart. In a spirit of solidarity, may our prayer bring all nations to stream toward the holy mountain where all are instructed in God’s ways to walk the path toward universal peace.
