Perhaps the hardest experience in a relationship is betrayal and mistrust. Both readings address that issue as far as our relationship with God. A relationship implies great trust, understanding, and concern for one another. When that is violated by one of the persons it causes great pain, sorrow, and anger. That certainly is the feeling expressed in our first reading from Exodus. Yahweh’s hurt and anger are directed at the Israelites because of their unfaithfulness. Moses intercedes and Yahweh relents.
In the Gospel, people mistrusted Jesus and his love. Betrayal reveals our human frailty. We are vulnerable people. We are like ships floating in the water enjoying the freedom of serene movement, but when a storm arises we need our faith to anchor us to keep us steadfast. As we seek for that anchor God stays with us directing the course to follow to encounter that anchor and to put it down. Sometimes we follow God’s direction and sometimes not so much. We feel we know better what to do. The choice is ours. What will be your choice when faced with other tempting possibilities to love? Will you remember God’s love is everlasting and turn back only to be enfolded in God’s loving embrace and set on the right course?
