On this first day of 2020, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the World Day of Peace. The Christmas Octave along with the Dominican Month for Peace (December 1, 2019 – January 1, 2020) end today. I am tempted to say, “out with the old… in with the new,” but I learned years ago that some truths don’t change with a new month, a new year or even a new century.
The entrance antiphon for Mass reminds us that “today a light will shine upon us, for the Lord is born for us; and He will be called Wondrous God, Prince of Peace, Father of Future Ages.” As we continue to celebrate the mystery of the Incarnation, you and I can follow the example of the shepherds by going in haste to find Mary, Joseph, Baby Jesus, not just within our comfort zones. Like so many today, the Holy Family fled violence at home and found refuge in a foreign land. We can also share the “good news” that we have heard over and over since Christmas Day.
Back in 1972 during the Cold War, St. Pope Paul VI (1963-1978), the courageous “shepherd,” who established January 1st as World Day of Peace, first observed in 1968, challenged all people of good will, in particular, world leaders, to let go of a behavior inherited from the Roman Empire: “Si vis pacem, para bellum - meaning - If you want peace, prepare for war.” He invited them to adopt a more Christ-like attitude: “If you want peace, work for justice.” Pope Francis’ message for this World Day of Peace is titled: “Good Politics is at the Service of Peace.” May God, in His mercy through the intercession of the Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, help us to be peacemakers as He continues to bless us with peace of mind, peace of heart today and every day!
