These are truly challenging times for all of us as we deal with the State of Emergency over the Coronavirus Pandemic. In my life, I have never seen anything like this!
Please know of the prayers of the friars of the Southern Dominican Province for all who are suffering from the virus, or others who are at risk. We also pray for those whose lives have been adversely affected by the many restrictions: including travelers, students, business owners, the elderly and sick. In addition, we pray for those who have died or have lost loved ones to this disease.
Our patron saint, St. Martin de Porres, was known for his compassion (which literally means “to suffer with”) for the poor, the sick, and the hungry. St. Martin was known to heal many people, and he certainly demonstrated his care for everyone in need. Another great Dominican saint, St. Catherine of Siena, cared for many victims of the plague in 14th Century Italy. In more recent times, the Dominican friars and sisters were known for their care for the victims of Yellow Fever in Memphis in the 19th Century.
All our ministries are abiding by the regulations of their local dioceses regarding the opening of Churches, and scheduling of Masses and other liturgies. Please contact the individual ministry for further information.
I invite you to join with the suffering Church throughout the world as we prepare to celebrate the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ during Holy Week and Easter.
May God bless you all.
Fr. Tom Condon, O.P.
