Simeon came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus ... he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: "Lord, now let your servant go in peace; your word has been fulfilled ... The child's father and mother were amazed at what was said about him ..." (Luke 2: 27-33)
It's interesting to me to think of Mary and Joseph as being amazed. They each received a visit from the angel of God. Surely, they both knew this child was special. And yet, they were amazed to hear what God had done. Although they were aware this child was conceived by the Holy Spirit, hearing the words spoken aloud moved them deeply.
We too are very familiar with who Jesus is. Are we amazed and moved deeply by the words and experiences of Jesus in our lives? Are we present to the moments we encounter the "light which God sent to reveal his love?" As we celebrate Jesus' coming into the world - into our lives, let us stop and with eyes wide open, allow our hearts to be amazed at God's great gift to us. Let us find peace in our lives and seek to share God's love and peace in a world that yearns for the "light which God sent to reveal his love."
