The “rich man” has no name in Jesus’ parable today, but as we observe him in the atmosphere of our Lenten journey we realize he seems uncomfortably familiar: the selfish self-centeredness that renders him insensitive to others; his way of being so taken up with himself, his comfort, pleasure, and convenience, that his life of faith has no depth. The poor Lazarus lying at his door had actually been a gift in his life, who could have touched his heart and stirred him to compassion -- except for one thing: though the rich man knew Lazarus by name and must have seen him every day, he managed to ignore him.
Lord Jesus, you have a way of probing our minds and testing our hearts. Search my heart this Lent, show me to myself. Draw me to face my selfish self-centeredness. Heal me and teach me your way of loving compassion.
