Blessed Woman Excellent Man, redeem for the dull the average way, that common ungifted natures may believe that their normal vision can walk to perfection. - W.H. Auden
On many occasions of our life, reality is even better than the expectations that we had about something. God always exceeds our expectations, and there’s no better example than the conception of Jesus in Mary’s womb. Mary will be the mother of Jesus, but he will be the work of the Holy Spirit, not the fruit of a carnal relationship, the promised Savior. The virginal conception signifies that the birth of Jesus is a new beginning, a beginning that is the fruit of the creative power of God and not related to human intervention. Jesus is not only full of the Spirit, but has been created by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Discipleship is the fruit of the Holy Spirit in the Church and for the Church. For that reason, to process of growth in the faith is under the surprising and powerful action of the Spirit. The links that unite the community are not determined by parentage but by the saving action of God. Our history is the setting where human beings and their acceptance of the Holy Spirit become instruments of healing and salvation. Joseph is a great example of this process, as he is asked by God to love a child that is not his, and to love this child no matter the consequences for him. Joseph believes the message and mission given to him by God and becomes an instrument of the divine plan of healing and salvation. May the birth of our Savior be the liberation for our communities, the instrument of justice for all peoples and the source of life for every believer!
